Perimenopause is a matrescence too: the change nobody names
We have a word for becoming a mother. It is matrescence, the profound reshaping of a woman as she crosses into motherhood, body and identity and place in the world all shifting at once.
It took a long time for that word to get the attention it deserved.
Here is what I have come to believe after years in women’s health. There is another crossing just as big, just as physical, just as disorienting, and it has even less language around it. It happens somewhere in the forties for most women, sometimes earlier. We call the hormone part perimenopause and mostly leave it there, as if it were only a matter of hot flashes to be waited out.
It is not only that. It is a whole becoming. And treating it as merely an ending, or worse, as a decline to be quietly managed, is one of the ways we keep failing women in midlife.
Two thresholds, more alike than we admit
Think about what matrescence actually is. Hormones in upheaval. Sleep rearranged. Moods you do not recognize as yours. A body that changes faster than you can update your sense of self. The strange grief of missing who you were, tangled with becoming someone new. And a culture that hands you almost no honest preparation for any of it.
Now read that again and hold perimenopause next to it. The estrogen and progesterone that climbed in pregnancy are the same hormones now swinging and declining in ways that scramble your cycle, your sleep, your temperature, your temper. The identity question returns with new weight. Who am I now, in a body that is shifting again, in a life where the roles that defined me are changing.
Both are developmental transitions, not malfunctions. We just decided one was worth a word and the other was worth a shrug.
The symptoms nobody warned you about
Most women expect hot flashes and maybe an irregular period. Then perimenopause arrives with a longer, stranger list and no one told them it was normal.
Cycles that lengthen, shorten, vanish, then return heavier than ever. Sleep that breaks apart in the small hours. Brain fog that makes you lose the word mid-sentence and quietly panic about it. Mood swings, anxiety that was never there before, and a rage that can surprise you with its heat. Changes in libido and in how your body feels to you. Joint aches, skin changes, a shifting relationship with your own reflection.
And because the list is so scattered, the same thing happens that happens to so many mothers. A woman brings it to a provider and is told she is fine, or stressed, or just getting older. The symptoms get filed under her emotions instead of examined. If that sounds familiar, it should. It is the same dismissal that follows women through the maternity system, showing up again at a new stage of life. Being waved off does not become acceptable because you are older.
Restoring her, not just enduring it
At Nesting in You, the third word of how we work is Restore. Perimenopause is where that word earns its keep. This season is not about gritting your teeth until it passes. It is about being heard, understood, and cared for through a real transition, the same as any other.
That can mean getting educated on what is actually happening in your body so the symptoms stop feeling like a betrayal. It can mean advocating for real answers instead of accepting a shrug. It can mean tending to sleep, movement, nourishment, and stress in ways that fit the woman you are now, not the one you were at thirty. And it can mean grieving what is ending while making room for what is arriving, because both are allowed.
Because here is the reframe I want to leave you with. On the other side of this crossing is not a lesser woman. Plenty of women describe a clarity and a steadiness in this chapter they never had before, a lower tolerance for what does not matter and a deeper claim on what does. That is not consolation. That is the becoming.
Perimenopause is a matrescence too. You are not declining. You are crossing over.
It deserves the same honesty, the same preparation, and the same care. And you should not have to do it without anyone naming what is happening to you.
