Praying through the season you can’t fix

Some seasons will not move when you push on them.

You have prayed the prayer. You have done the things. You have believed, and waited, and believed again, and the thing you are asking for has not come. The pregnancy that has not held. The postpartum stretch that got dark and stayed dark longer than anyone said it would. The diagnosis. The waiting that has no visible end. The caregiving that asks more of you every week with no one caring for the caregiver.

And somewhere in there, the quiet question arrives, whether you say it out loud or not. If I have prayed and it has not changed, what is prayer even for.

I want to sit with you in that honestly, because I do not think faith is served by pretending we do not ask it.

Prayer is not a lever

We are taught, without anyone quite saying it, to treat prayer like a lever. Pull it the right way, with enough faith and the right words, and the outcome we want drops out. So when the outcome does not come, we conclude that we prayed wrong, or believed too little, or that God is far away.

I do not think that is what prayer is. I have stood beside women in the hardest hours of their lives, and I have watched prayer do something other than fix. I have watched it hold. Prayer in a season you cannot change is less like a machine you operate and more like being carried when your own legs will not do it. It does not always move the mountain. Sometimes it moves you, steadies you, keeps you tethered to the truth that you are not alone in the dark, even when the dark does not lift.

That is not a lesser thing. On some nights it is the only thing.

When God feels silent

Let me say the part people leave out. Sometimes you pray and heaven feels like a closed door. The Psalms are full of that. Faithful people crying out and asking how long, and how long, and where are you. That cry is not the absence of faith. It is faith refusing to let go while it is hurting. You are allowed to be honest in your prayers. You are allowed to be angry in them. A faith that can only handle your gratitude was never big enough to hold your whole life.

I keep company with Deborah, from the book of Judges. She was a woman who led and judged and sang, who held strength and faith together without apology, in a season that demanded both. When I think about praying through what I cannot fix, I do not picture a small, soft plea. I picture a woman standing up in the middle of it, still speaking to God, still leading, still refusing to be silenced by how hard it is. You can pray from that posture. Held and unbroken are not opposites.

You were never meant to be covered alone

Here is the other thing about hard seasons. They isolate you. Pain has a way of convincing you that no one else could understand, that you are the only one, that you should carry it quietly so you do not burden anyone. That lie gets louder the longer the season runs.

It is exactly why CoverHER exists. It is a free prayer circle, a place to be covered by other women when you do not have the strength to hold yourself up. Not so someone can fix your season. Nobody there will hand you a tidy answer. Just so you are not carrying it by yourself in a dark room. Its whole heart is one line: she is never covered alone. That includes the women in every season, and the birth workers walking beside them, who so often pour out and forget they need covering too.

So if you are in a season that will not move, hear this. You are not praying wrong. Your faith is not too small. The silence is not proof of abandonment. And you were never meant to do this alone.

Keep praying, even the angry prayers, even the tired ones, even the ones that are just breathing in God’s direction because words ran out. Let yourself be carried. And come get covered.

We will hold the ones you cannot hold yourself.
